Charlie*Adler - Competing for Pinkpop
Since it has been some time since I saw Charlie*Adler, I decided to skip the Metro Deathfest which also had some interesting bands and went to work at the band contest known as Nu Of Nooit, in which bands compete for a spot on the Pinkpop festival. And since Charlie*Adler was the only real metal band to play this evening (and I missed most of the performance of the punkrock of The Wisecrack and a surfrock band of which I forgot the name because I had to work behind the bar), I will only make a review for them.

Because this was an evening where no real soundcheck could be done, most of the bands were quite loud. This was also the case with Charlie*Adler which was kind of nice actually. Luckily I listened to their album that very same day, so I could remember quite some of their material. Their show was reasonably tight, but very entertaining. I love to see Harold (Legion Of The Damned and Inhume) play bass with this band and to see Niek (Concubine) thrash the hell out of his kit in fucked up rhythms. Also since I saw vocalist Tammi a couple of times before this show with his other band Collision, it was nice to see him do this again.

But I must say that I noticed that their style of experimental (math)metalcore doesn’t really stand out when compared to greats like Converge and Burnt By The Sun, which is a real shame. Could be the fact that I still have a raw mix of the album and the rough loud sound they were playing with, but I feel like they don’t really stand out. Perhaps with some new material they will impress me a bit more. Nevertheless it’s still a nice band to see and hear, with a more original twist to it than 90 percent of the metal bands in this country.
